Why They Are Called Stinging Nettles

Don't harvest nettles without gloves.

"the very tip of a leaf from a nearby plant barely grazed the side of my hand."

I saw a small stand of nettles in the back yard and decided to cut some tops for a smoothie. I didn't put my gloves on, there were only five or six plants, spaced well and I thought I could get away with it and I have been wanting to be stung to see what it's like, anyway. I was carefully clipping and one fell to the ground. When I picked it up the very tip of a leaf from a nearby plant barely grazed the side of my hand. I didn't even think I touched it but the instant burning pain told a different story.

It didn't hurt so bad that I had to stop, but it was definitely painful... I could imagine if you didn't know and walked through a bush it would be excruciating. it's been about 10-15 minutes and the pain is gone, just tingling now, but the welts still there. The ones at the top that are close together have almost grown into one welt.

Well, now I know. And now I go eat them :)
