About Imbolc
February 2 is the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. We know it as Groundhog Day, but its roots go much farther back into Europe to a Celtic celebration day called Imbolc, an ancient festival associated with purification in readiness for the new spring season. The word "inbolc" means "in the belly." Just as the quickening, or first stirrings of life in the wombs of animals is occurring at this time, likewise the Earth is "in the belly" of the middle of winter. Another old Irish celebration on this day was known as St. Brigid’s Day. The Gaelic Brighid was originally an Irish goddess, associated with keeping a flame perpetually burning. European Christianity incorporated her pagan celebration and called it Candlemas by having the clergy bless the candles that people traditionally burned in their windows on this day. Held 40 days after Christmas, it is also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary, mother of Jesus.
